Includes family correspondence between Smith and his sister Eliza, his brothers Thomas, Richard Lee, and George W., Jr., his cousins Richard Adams and John Adams, and his nieces Sarah and Georgiana Smith. Other correspondents include U.S. Senator J.J. Crittenden, J. Wilcox, Jr., and Charles S. Brown. Topics include Richmond news and the business depression of 1837. Among Smith's business papers are accounts, receipts, and bank records, including an account book with E.W. Tompkins grocery, accounts and receipts with Randolph and McRedin, and a bank book and cancelled checks from the Farmer's Bank of Virginia. Legal records include the wills of Richard Adams, Thomas Smith, Richard Lee Smith, William Styles, and Miles Selden, hiring out of slaves, court case records including three concerning revolutionary war bounty lands, and land records and estate papers of John Adams, Richard Adams, and George W.
